I am 36 y/o with platysmal banding and slight laxity on my neck/under chin. Ive been recommended Ultherapy by two plastic surgeons (lower face/neck or neck only). But Im nervous abt reports that Ultherapy made people’s skin worse and exaggerated sagging issues. Or that the results were negligible which wouldnt ideal either. Is Ultherapy effective for treating banding and laxity? Best option? How long do results last? Does skin appear worse over time? Are there other treatments I should consider?
Hi and thank you for your question! Ultherapy can help with skin laxity in neck and it should help you. However, since you mentioned platysmal banding, contractions of platysmal muscle is the underlying contributing factor (which is exacerbated as we lose collagen in skin) and relaxing the muscle with Botox injection can help with that as well. As for Ultherapy treatment, it works by stimulating body making new collagen, so as long as it done by qualified clinicians and according to the manufacturer’s instructions, it is not expected to make the skin worse. Please note that aging is an ongoing process, so when a patient undergoes a treatment like Ultherapy, while it offers some improvements, the underlying aging process will still continue (albeit at a slower rate) and this could explain why some patients feels their skin got “worse” (the real comparator in such cases would have been their own skin without treatment which would have been most likely worse off). Also, since this treatment replies on body making new collagen, the improvements emerge very gradually and it could takes weeks to months, making the improvements more difficult to spot unless before and after pictures are taken and compared. I hope it helps and good luck!
